A Famous Sea Kayak Destination
We’re based in Castletown because it offers easy access into the protected waters of Portland harbour, one of the largest man made harbours in Europe. Straight from the slipway their is a wide variety of paddling opportunities. An activity rich in history, wildlife and adventure.
Brilliant All-weather Kayaking
Portland, the jewel of Wessex is a huge tilted table of limestone. Nestled in the Jurassic coast and claiming world heritage site status. Portland Harbour is the largest man made harbour in the world offering fantastic paddling. Cruise past the two protecting castles. Amble up the fleet tidal lagoon, a haven for bird life. Marvel at a 100 million tonnes of shingle that makes up Chesil beach. Snap a photo by the Olympic rings, reminding the world of our triumphs in the 2012 sailing Olympics. Take a dip at one of the many beaches and enjoy exploring a beautiful area rich in wildlife.
History
Portland is bursting with folklore and history. It’s the only mention of any Dorset town in the Doomsday book under the heading ‘The Land of Kings’ The stone is world famous and can be seen in buildings of significant architecture such as St Pauls Cathedral. Hear stories of shipwrecks, smuggling and fishing, find out why no one says ‘Rabbit’ and how U-Boats were blocked from entering the harbour during the war. Paddle to chequered fort, past the Millbury’s or one of King Henry VIII homes. Learn about the Prisons on the island and some of the famous escape plans.

If you have kayaked with us from Portland Harbour before and fancy exploring a new section of coast please get in touch and we will be happy to help organise this for you.
